چکیده

We study phonon-mediated dissipation mechanisms in small-scale mechanical systems in light of recent efforts to design high-Q micrometerand nanometer-scale electro-mechanical systems (MEMS and NEMS). We consider dissipation mechanisms which redistribute the energy within a resonator, such as thermoelastic damping, the Akhiezer effect, and the Landau–Rumer effect, as well as the radiation of energy away from the resonator into its surroundings. r 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Investigation of Thermoelastic Damping in the Longitudinal Vibration of a Micro Beam

In the design of high Quality factor (Q) micro or nano beam resonators, different dissipation mechanisms may have damaging effects on the quality factor. One of the major dissipation mechanisms is the thermoelastic damping (TED) that needs an accurate consideration for prediction. In this paper, thermoelastic damping of the longitudinal vibration of a homogeneous micro beam with both ends clamp...

Multiscale analysis of phonon mediated dissipation in crystalline solids

In this study, we develop a multiscale method to study intrinsic damping in nano-structure. Vibrational frequencies in the range of few GHz are considered. Deformation of the structure, at such high rates of vibration, results in a nonequilibrium phonon distribution. The condition of local equilibrium, as is often used in the existing mutli-scale approaches, no longer remains valid. The nonequi...

Study on Thermal and Hydrodynamic Indexes of a Nanofluid Flow in a Micro Heat Sink

The paper numerically presents laminar forced convection of a nanofluid flowing in a duct at microscale. Results were compared with both analytical and experimental data and observed good concordance with previous studies available in the literature. Influences of Brinkman and Reynolds number on thermal and hydrodynamic indexes have been investigated. For a given nanofluid, no change in efficie...

Couple Stress Effect on Micro/Nanocantilever-based Capacitive Gas Sensor

Micro/nanocantilevers have been employed as sensors in many applications including chemical and biosensing. Due to their high sensitivity and potential for scalability, miniature sensing systems are in wide use and will likely become more prevalent in micro/nano-electromechanical systems (M-NEMSs). This paper is mainly focused on the use of sensing systems that employ micro/nano-size cantilever...

Evaluation of the Phonon Mean Free Path in Thin Films by using Classical Molecular Dynamics

A non-equilibrium molecular dynamic (NEMD) study has been performed to evaluate the phonon mean free path (MFP) of a solid material. Solid argon with a Lennard-Jones (L-J) potential is selected as a simulation material. The thermal conductivity of a thin film plays an important role in the design of nano-electro-mechanical systems (NEMS) or micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) since heat rem...
